SMS on its way out
Happy new year everyone! I hope you had a safe and fun celebration of the new year.
A few years ago I wished the phone-companies adapted to the usage of wlans on smartphones and let us use tcp/ip when sending sms/mms if wlan was available. But that never happened and now they might regret that? In Norway the sms/mms usage is decreasing and this new years eve Telenor and Netcom transported only 32 million sms and mms. That is 25 million less compared to last year.
Our dear neighbors in Sweden sent 59 million compared to 67,7 last year, not a decrease marked as in Norway though it draws a picture of where we are going. More and more people send via Facebook, Twitter, iMessage, Viber and other alternatives. I wonder how this will turn out in the end for the telephone companies. People are using wifi alternatives for voice as well, maybe 2012 will be the year for that? What do you think?
